Mozambique: Media & Communications Lead-Cyclone Idai Response

Job Purpose

Develop, lead, implement and monitor media and communications for the cyclone response.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

i. Establish Oxfam’s media lead role for Idai response, with a focus on providing leadership in media relations, story gathering, coordination of public messaging, and pro-active and reactive media work.

ii. Develop and maintain key relationships both internally and externally, especially with media outlets and journalists in covering the cyclone in all three countries.

iii. Produce media updates for all Oxfam media colleagues and pitch media angles to them for use in their markets, and be the switchboard for incoming media queries from affiliates

iv. Update the Idai Songsheet, presenting the consolidated story, angles and messages on various topics to the whole confederation; develop Q&A sheet for all relevant issues and possible questions.

  1. In collaboration with OI and affiliates: keep log of media coverage globally (Trend Kite and reporting from affiliates)
  2. Generate regular, high quality media coverage for Oxfam’s response in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe through proactive and reactive media work, including press release, media advisories, Idai response updates, and 1 on 1 relations with journalists.
  3. Coordinate story gathering with country comms lead and story gatherers in OI. The media lead will not produce tailored Fundraising content, but will help identify potential opportunities as requested.
  4. Ensure all public messaging is in line with the country’s concerns, working closely with the country advocacy, campaigns, and media/communications teams, and programme staff on how to use media strategically in a risky environment.
  5. Ensure protection of Oxfam’s brand, and adherence to procedures, protocols and policies, including guidelines for interviewing vulnerable people and documenting permission for use of digital images.
  6. Ensure Oxfam’s media products are of a high quality, and work with Regional Policy and Influencing Manager to ensure coherence and consistency of messaging. Ensure that all media products go through the agreed sign off procedures

xi. Help raise the voice of Oxfam partners as key responders

xii. Raise the voice of survivors, through media work with specific attention to women and girls.
