In Liberia, the threats to people living in poverty and to human rights are many, varied, and complex.
Liberia ranks 181 out of 189 countries on 2018 Human Development Index and 154 out of 189 on the gender inequality index (GII), making it one of the poorest and most gender-inequal countries in the world. 63% of the country 4.6 million people live on less than $1.90 per day (the extreme poverty line)
Liberia is still recovering from a prolonged civil war (1989 – 2003) that killed around 200,000 people and forced 1.5 million people to flee their homes. The country is prone to natural, environmental and public health disasters. An epidemic of Ebola virus disease occurred in Liberia from 2014 to 2015, along with the neighbouring countries of Guinea and Sierra Leone. With over 4,800 Ebola victims, Liberia had the highest death toll from the disease.
Since the Accra Comprehensive Peace Accord ended its 14-year civil war in August 2003, Liberia has held three open, democratic elections, in 2005, 2011 and 2017. During this period Liberia has improved from a rank of 30th in 2006 to 23rd out of 54 African countries in the 2018 Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG), illustrating an increasing improvement in governance. Nonetheless, the Government faces mounting pressure to increase employment, tackle corruption, and improve service delivery.
Oxfam began working in Liberia in 1995. Our overall goal (2017-2020 Strategy) is to work with others to enable Liberian women and men to have an equal, sustained, representative and equitable dialogue with each other and with the State on strategies to redress inequalities, as a mean to reduce poverty. The strategy has four inter-dependent programmes: (1) Gender justice – Women and youth at the heart of it all to address inequalities; (2) Access to Essential Services – Education, Access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSH); (3) Support to income generation now and sustainable livelihood options for the future; and (4) Saving lives now and in the future
The Role
The Country Director will be responsible for implementing the Oxfam 2020 Vision which aims to create a stronger Oxfam that is globally coordinated and relevant in every country in which we work. Aiming to create a future where Oxfam is a more interdependent network, driven more by knowledge, organized for more simplicity internally and more globally balanced
Our next Country Director will require significant experience in the following areas:-
