The Oxfam International Secretariat is currently headquartered in Oxford, with advocacy and campaigns offices in Washington DC, New York, Brussels, Geneva, and a liaison office with the Africa Union in Addis Ababa.

This post will be part of the OI Secretariat Advocacy and Campaigns team and based in the OI Office in NYC.

The Role

Oxfam International seeks a Senior Policy Advisor - Inclusive Peace and Security, based in NY, will lead on several aspects of Oxfam’s growing advocacy work on inclusive peace and security, including the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) and Youth, Peace, and Security (YPS) agendas, as well as broader issues of peacebuilding and preventing violent extremism. This post is critical to enable Oxfam to take its current strategy and campaigning work on these agendas to the next level.

Using a combination of research, policy development, advocacy, external representation, strategy development and alliance-building the post-holder will specifically:

  • Advocate for effective implementation of commitments made under relevant UNSC resolutions, with an emphasis on meaningful participation of youth and women in peacebuilding and reconstruction efforts;
  • Build consistent links between local voices and global policy processes, and ensure partners are regularly part of policy conversations at UN headquarters;
  • Work with allies to increase the space at UN headquarters for voice and participation of affected women and youth;
  • Deepen Oxfam’s understanding and analysis of trends at the NY level on WPS, YPS, peacebuilding, and preventing violent extremism at the NY level; and advocate for change in line with Oxfam’s strategy and goals.

This position will work closely with the NY-based NGOWG on Women, Peace and Security (of which Oxfam is a member). S/he will work closely with a colleague in a similar position at Oxfam International’s office in Addis Ababa. S/he will also travel as necessary to country programs.

This is a one-year post, which could be extended dependent on fundraising by the post-holder and Oxfam affiliates. Expected start date would be January 2018.

Fluency in English required and fluency or working knowledge of a second UN official language is desirable.
