Media & Communication Team Lead - Oxfam in Africa

The Role

Oxfam International’s Africa Platformis looking for a Media and Communication team Lead who will provide strategic media, communication, and social media advice to senior-level staff at Oxfam in Africa level in the development of plans, matters of brand risk, crisis communication and to maximise communications impact. This role will profile Oxfam’s work at different media and in wider communications to support Oxfam’s public engagement including fundraising and campaign goals.

Who we’re looking for a person with

Leadership and Management

  • Design a Sub-Sahara regional strategy that secures high-impact media to help raise Oxfam’s profile, bring change on core Oxfam issues, and raise funds.
  • Act as a conduit between global and Oxfam in Africa communication team to support the sharing of high- quality material and to amplify national, regional, continental stories in the global media.
  • Provide strategic media, social media, and communications advice at the senior level in the Oxfam in Africa. This would include in the development of team plans, appropriate responses in the media and social media, brand risk and maximising impact of communications

Technical

  • Work with Oxfam in Africa communication teams to deliver high impact stories for use in national, Sub-Sahara region of Africa and global markets for traditional and social media
  • Support countries and Africa platform in managing media crisis and emergencies.
  • Respond to the news agenda in the Sub-Sahara region to identify opportunities to profile Oxfam objectives and identify risk.
  • Be the first point of contact for press officers across the confederation for Sub-Sahara region media enquiries.
  • Evaluate the impact of media projects and provide regular reporting for decision making.

People and Resource Management

  • Manage the Africa Platform Digital Content Lead and the Media and Communications Officer according to Oxfam’s leadership and feminist principles.
  • Provide or support media training of Oxfam in Africa communication and campaigns’ teams and develop spokespeople to speak on humanitarian, development, and campaigning issues
  • Identify training needs for communication teams at country level, plan and organize trainings
    accordingly.
  • Chair or participate at regular meetings with program and influencing team, and country communication staff to align and update on key communication/media issues.

Experience, Knowledge & Competences

  • Qualification in media studies or journalism.
  • At least 7 years’ experience as a journalist or media specialist
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English and other languages particularly French are highly desirable.
  • Exceptional multi-media and story-gathering skills.
  • Ability to lead complex projects
  • Ability to represent the organisation in high-profile and high-pressured external environments
  • Proven ability in strategic thinking and leadership
  • Innovative and creative approach to problem solving
